Amazon commits ₹60,000 crore to a Telangana data-centre complex, its largest India build

Telangana chief minister A. Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone on July 15 for an AWS data-centre complex that Amazon says will draw ₹60,000 crore over roughly a decade. The build spans about 300 acres across Future City and Chandanvelly, and Amazon describes it as one of its largest India facilities. The figures are the company's and the state's, reported through ThePrint, NewsMeter, and The Federal; this is a foundation-stone commitment, not capacity on the ground.

What this means. The capital, the land, and the political backing are real. The compute is not — at least not yet. A decade-phased build measured in acres and rupees is a commitment to spend, and Amazon has the balance sheet and the AWS demand pipeline to convert it. The government has reportedly directed Sarvam AI and the IIT-Bombay-led BharatGen consortium to build indigenous cyber-defence AI models comparable to Anthropic's Mythos, meant to run on isolated government compute for critical-infrastructure protection. Separately, MeitY has asked ministries to hold off on OpenAI and Anthropic models for cybersecurity work. Both threads come from reporting by Inc42 and BW Businessworld, not from a published government instrument — read this as a reported directive, not a notified policy.

What this means. This is a security posture, not a capability release. No model has shipped; what exists is a build mandate and a hold-off instruction. The directive predicts sovereign frontier capability in a defensive niche — indigenous, domestically hosted, air-gapped from the public internet — but the position is touched, not moved.
